Influenza Immunization Campaign Implementation Guide Development
Healthcare organizations have a wide variety of approaches to the immunization of their workers. Each influenza season, healthcare planners devote time and effort to encourage staff immunization through an annual influenza immunization campaign. Some organizations have limited resources, limited organization of annual influenza immunization campaigns and poor overall immunization results amongst their workers. While other organizations have more structured campaigns and higher immunization rates, all healthcare organizations struggle with the need to immunize their workers against influenza and have limited access to evidence-based resources with which to plan their campaign.
Our team is developing an implementation guide to facilitate the use of the evidence-based research on strategies to increase immunization rates by healthcare planners and introduce ways to incorporate the OIDA into their campaign. The implementation guide was developed based on the following sources of information: 1) Systematic review of literature on interventions to increase HCW immunization rates, 2) ideas from the consultation meetings with different campaign organizers, 3) experiences of organizations implementing the OIDA in 2008-2009, 4) results from the OIDA pilot study, and 5) input from occupational health and infection control practitioners working closely with the project team.
Planning for 2009 – 2010
As part of the development of the implementation guide, our team intends to assess the feasibility of the guide with the OIDA across different long-term and acute-care health organizations. The results of the proposed feasibility study will be used to improve the content and formatting of the guide, so that healthcare planners will find the tool easy-to-use and applicable to their organization.
